Living in Dakar means living by the ocean, and yet many residents make little use of the sea beyond the beach. Water leisure in Dakar is plentiful, affordable and often just minutes from home. Here is our guide to making it a real hobby: weekend ideas, budget, activities with friends, family or colleagues, and a calendar for the year.
This guide is written first for Dakar residents, Senegalese or expatriate, looking for something to do at weekends, on summer evenings or on days off. It is also for visitors who come back regularly and want to try something new. At Senegal Nautique, we welcome travellers and Dakar residents alike, and many residents are surprised by how easy it is to spend an hour on the water, by kayak, jet ski or boat, without leaving the city. If you are looking for the full list of possible activities instead, see our article on water activities in Dakar.
In short: in Dakar, water leisure starts at 5,000 F for half an hour of paddleboarding and 6,000 F for a clear kayak. Jet skiing starts at 15,000 F for 10 minutes, a seat on a shared boat at 8,000 F, and a private boat trip at 60,000 F for the whole group. Our Ouakam, Ngor and Mermoz bases are open every day from 11am to 7pm, depending on the sea.
Why make the sea your hobby?
Most big cities in the world would envy Dakar’s location. The peninsula is surrounded by water on three sides, with beaches, cliffs, islands and a sea you can enjoy for much of the year. From almost any neighbourhood, you reach the coast in a few minutes. It is a huge privilege, and water leisure is the simplest way to truly enjoy it, beyond a quick swim or a lunch facing the sea.
Going out on the water is first of all a break. The noise, the traffic jams and the pace of the city vanish as soon as you move a few dozen metres from the shore. The air is cooler, the light softer, and you rediscover the city from a new angle. For many, a kayak outing becomes the breather of the week: an hour without a phone, watching the rocks beneath the hull.
It is also a gentle, all-round physical activity. Paddling a kayak or balancing on a paddleboard works your back, arms, core and legs, without feeling like exercise. Jet skiing works your upper body and your concentration. And swimming, when conditions allow, remains one of the best exercises there is. All of it outdoors, facing the ocean, which makes all the difference compared with a gym.
Finally, water leisure is social. It is easy to share with friends, as a couple, with family or with colleagues, and it creates far more lasting memories than yet another restaurant outing. Organising a sea outing for a birthday, an end-of-year party or a weekend with friends takes little preparation, and everyone is still talking about it weeks later. For all these reasons, the sea deserves a regular place in your diary, not just when friends visit from abroad.

Weekend ideas by mood
Feeling calm? Clear kayaking is for you. In Ouakam, you follow the cliffs at the foot of the Mosque of the Divinity; in Ngor, you paddle across the bay facing the island. Allow 6,000 F per kayak, with or without an instructor, and usually without booking. Paddleboarding, at 5,000 F for half an hour, gives another feeling, standing on the water, when the sea is calm. A quiet outing in the late morning, followed by a grilled fish lunch in Ngor or on the corniche, makes a perfect Saturday.
Want a thrill? Head to Mermoz for jet skiing. Ten minutes at 15,000 F for a taste of speed, half an hour at 45,000 F to really let go, an hour at 70,000 F for the grand tour. For the sportiest, the kayak exploration from Ouakam to the Mamelles, about two hours along the coast, at 20,000 F per person, is a real little adventure.
Feeling curious? Board a boat trip. The tour of Ngor island, the Pointe des Almadies, the Mamelles lighthouse, Serpent islet or Gorée: each route shows Dakar in a different light. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, our 8-seat boat offers shared departures at 11am, 2pm and 5pm, from 8,000 F per person for the tour of Ngor island. It is the ideal solution if there are two or three of you and you do not want to hire a whole boat.
In a party mood? Hire the boat privately. The 8-seat boat starts at 60,000 F, and the big boat takes up to 15 people to Gorée, Serpent islet or for a half day. Add a gourmet platter of 26 or 50 sweet and savoury pieces, a playlist, and your birthday becomes a party at sea. And to capture it all, the drone photoshoot in a clear kayak gives you photos from the sky, delivered the same day.
Water leisure by budget
Good news: the sea is not just for big budgets. For under 10,000 F, you already have plenty for a great time. Half an hour of paddleboarding costs 5,000 F, a clear kayak 6,000 F, and a tandem kayak can be shared by two, so 3,000 F each. A seat on the shared boat for the tour of Ngor island costs 8,000 F. These short outings are perfect for a midday break or a weekend ritual.
Between 10,000 and 50,000 F, the range widens. A shared boat seat to the Pointe des Almadies costs 10,000 F, to the Mamelles lighthouse 19,000 F. The kayak exploration from Ouakam to the Mamelles costs 20,000 F per person. Jet skiing starts at 15,000 F for 10 minutes and goes up to 45,000 F for half an hour. A group drone photoshoot comes to 20,000 F per person from three people, kayaks extra. At this budget, you can build a real day out: kayak in the morning, jet ski in the afternoon.
Beyond that, as a group, private hire becomes attractive. The private 8-seat boat costs 60,000 F for the tour of Ngor island, 75,000 F to the Pointe des Almadies and 150,000 F to the Mamelles lighthouse. The big boat, up to 15 people, costs 150,000 F for Gorée. Split between eight or fifteen friends, the price per person stays reasonable, with the bonus of having the boat to yourselves.
A few tips to make your budget go further. Share a tandem kayak. Come on a weekday if you can, when it is quieter. Team up to bring down the per-person price of the drone photoshoot or the private boat. And follow us on social media, @senegalnautique, where we share our news. Finally, keep in mind that for on-request outings at Lac Rose or the Pointe des Almadies, transporting the kayaks is paid by the customer.

Your next weekend on the water

Book an outingWith friends, family or colleagues
With friends, water leisure is a chance to break the routine. A morning of clear kayaking in Ouakam, several jets booked at once in Mermoz, a private boat for a birthday or a bachelorette party: there is no shortage of formats. The group drone photoshoot, with coordinated outfits and kayaks arranged in a star, has become a classic for celebrations among friends. Let us know in advance for groups, so we can prepare the right number of kayaks or jets.
With family, the clear kayak is the ideal activity. Children are welcome from age 6, with an adult, and a life jacket is provided and mandatory. Seeing the rocks and fish beneath the hull fascinates them, and the outings stay short and close to shore. Ngor, sheltered by its island, is often the base best suited to young children. Boat trips suit all ages, including grandparents who prefer to stay seated. Our guide to family activities in Dakar gives you more ideas.
With colleagues, a sea outing makes an excellent team building. The big boat takes up to 15 people for a trip to Gorée, Serpent islet or a half day at sea, with gourmet platters on board. For a sportier group, a morning of kayaking followed by lunch on the beach brings a team together better than a meeting. Works councils and schools can contact us through our Contact and partnerships page to organise regular outings.
On your own, finally, the sea is also a personal pastime. An hour of kayaking or paddleboarding alone, at your own pace, is a form of active meditation. Riding a jet ski solo lets you improve your handling with every session. And nothing stops you from joining a shared boat departure at the weekend to meet other sea lovers. Whatever your format, the team is there to advise and supervise you.
Making it a regular habit
The secret to truly enjoying the sea in Dakar is regularity. A one-off outing leaves a nice memory; an outing every month becomes a way of life. Regulars improve quickly: they paddle further, stay longer on the paddleboard, ride the jet ski more confidently, and above all, they learn to read the sea. They can recognise a good clear-water day, choose the right spot depending on the swell and make the most of the best hours.
To build the habit, pick a fixed slot: Saturday at 11am, when the sea is often calm, or Sunday late afternoon, for the light. Alternate activities so you do not get bored: kayak one month, jet ski the next, boat for special occasions. Vary the bases too: Ouakam and its cliffs, Ngor and its island, Almadies or Lac Rose on request. Each spot has its own personality.
If you want to go further, Dakar also offers activities run by other organisations. Scuba diving is available notably with the Océanium, surfing is very popular in Ngor, Yoff, Almadies and Ouakam, with schools for all levels, and sea fishing is done with specialist operators such as the Cabane du Pêcheur or Atlantic Evasion. These activities are not offered by Senegal Nautique, but they go very well with kayaking, jet skiing and boat trips.
Finally, regularity comes with safety. Even as a regular, always wear your life jacket, listen to the team’s instructions, never go out alone without supervision and call the base before travelling to check the state of the sea. Dakar’s sea is generous, but it changes quickly: respecting it is the best way to keep coming back every week, for years.

The water leisure calendar
In Dakar, you can enjoy the sea all year round, but each period has its own character. From November to February, at the start of the dry season, the sky is often clear and the heat pleasant. The water starts to cool and gets properly fresh early in the year: a light wetsuit or a UV T-shirt makes outings more comfortable. It is a very good time for kayaking and boat trips, with superb light at the end of the day.
From March to June, the air stays dry and sunny. The water gradually warms up over the weeks, and the days get longer. Some periods can be windier: mornings are then the best time to go out. It is the ideal season to plan your regular outings and drone photoshoots, with lots of bright days.
From July to October, during the rainy season, the water is warm and swimming very pleasant. Showers and storms often come briefly, and the rest of the day can be magnificent. After a big storm, the water near the coast can get cloudy for a day or two: be flexible with your date. It is also the long school holiday period, when families and visiting members of the diaspora are out on the water in numbers.
Whatever the season, a few rules still apply: book ahead for weekends and public holidays, which are in high demand, call the base on the day to check the sea, and keep a plan B if conditions are not good.
