Clear water in Dakar: the practical guide

You really can find clear water in Dakar: on some days, you can see the rocks several metres below the hull of a clear kayak. On other days, the same sea is green, choppy or murky. This practical guide helps you understand why, read the signs before you go and choose the right spot and the right time to enjoy crystal-clear water.

At Senegal Nautique, we go out on the water every day in Ouakam and Ngor, and every morning we get the same question on WhatsApp: “Is the water clear today?”. The honest answer is that no one can guarantee it in advance, but you can put the odds on your side. We have already written an article about Dakar’s crystal-clear water, its spots and its colours. This one is more hands-on: it explains how to tell, on the day, whether conditions are good, and what to do if they are not.

In short: water clarity in Dakar depends mainly on the swell, the wind, recent rain and the light. A calm sea after several days without strong wind, a clear sky and a high sun in the late morning give the best chances. Ouakam and Ngor do not face the same way, so one can be clear when the other is not. The simplest thing is still to call the base on the day at +221 77 867 55 58.

Why the water is not clear every day

Water clarity is first of all a question of particles. When the water is clear, light passes through freely and bounces off the bottom: you see the rocks, the sand, the seagrass. When particles are suspended in it, sand, debris, plankton or runoff, light is scattered before it reaches the bottom, and the sea looks green, milky or grey. Anything that stirs up the bottom or brings material into the water therefore reduces visibility.

The first factor in Dakar is the swell. Waves arriving from the open ocean churn up the bottom near the coast, especially in shallow areas like those where we kayak. A big swell can cloud the water for several hours, even several days, even if the sky is perfectly blue. Conversely, after a few days of calm sea, the sand settles and the water becomes transparent again.

The second factor is the wind. A strong wind creates surface chop that breaks up the light and stops you from seeing the bottom, even if the water itself is clean. It also pushes surface water around and can bring seaweed or particles back towards the coast. The third factor is rain. During the rainy season, from July to October, showers wash over the land and the city, and runoff reaches the sea near the shore. After a big storm, it is better to wait a day or two.

Finally there is plankton, the micro-organisms living in the water that, on some days, tint it green. Their presence varies with water temperature and currents. It is a natural phenomenon, the sign of a living sea rich in fish, but it can reduce transparency. All these factors combine: that is why two seemingly identical days can offer very different water, and why we always prefer to give you the real state of the sea rather than a promise.

How to tell if the water will be clear

Before you travel, a few simple checks give you a good idea of conditions. Start with the swell. Marine weather apps show wave height and period. For a kayak outing with clear water, a low swell is ideal. Look at the previous days too: a sea that has been calm for two or three days is often clearer than one that has only just calmed down after a blow.

Then look at the wind. A light wind in the morning that sometimes picks up in the afternoon is a common pattern on the coast. If the forecast wind stays light all day, that is good news for visibility and for comfort on the water. If it is strong from the morning, the surface will be choppy and the bottom hard to see, even in clean water.

Think about recent rain as well. During the rainy season, a storm the day before or two days before can cloud the water near the shore. During the dry season, this factor almost disappears, but swell and wind take over. Finally, cloud cover matters: under a grey sky, even clear water looks darker and less turquoise, because the light shining on it is weaker.

The best indicator is still the eye of those on the spot. Our team sees the sea as soon as the base opens, at 11am. Message us on WhatsApp or call +221 77 867 55 58 on the day: we will tell you honestly what the water looks like, whether one spot is better than another and whether a later slot might be better. That quick call saves you a wasted trip, and lets us point you to the outing most likely to please you that day.

Where to find clear water depending on conditions

Dakar has the advantage of several coasts facing different directions. When the swell hits one side of the peninsula, the other is sometimes spared. That is one of the reasons we have two main bases for clear kayaking, and why our team sometimes advises you to switch spots at the last minute.

Ouakam, at the foot of the Mosque of the Divinity, has very photogenic volcanic rocky seabeds. In a calm sea, the water takes on striking green and turquoise shades, and the rocks show clearly beneath the hull. It is the favourite spot for photos from the sky. However, when the swell enters the cove, the bottom gets cloudy faster, and the team then adapts the route by staying in the most sheltered areas.

Ngor benefits from the protection of its island. The bay, facing Ngor island, is often calmer than the open coast, which makes it a good choice on swell days and a safe bet with children. Depending on the area, you pass over sand or rocky patches near the island, and the water often takes on beautiful green shades. In Almadies, on request, the beach of the former Club Med also has beautiful clear shallows when the sea allows.

Further offshore, the islands often have more transparent water, away from the direct influence of the city. Sarpan islet and its coves, reached by boat, are a good example. Finally, Lac Rose, on request, is a special case: it is not clear water in the marine sense, but very salty water whose pink colour depends on the light and the season. We cannot guarantee the sea’s transparency or the lake’s colour, but we always point you to the most promising spot.

The right time of day and of year

During the day, light plays a decisive role. When the sun is high, its rays reach deep into the water and light up the bottom: that is when the sea looks clearest and most colourful. Late morning and early afternoon are therefore often the best slots to see the bottom from a clear kayak. The wind, often lighter early in the day, adds another advantage: less chop, a smoother surface and so better visibility.

In the late afternoon, the light becomes lower. It gives magnificent warm colours on the cliffs and the sky, ideal for atmospheric photos, but it penetrates the water less and the bottom is harder to see. If your priority is seeing the rocks beneath the hull, come between 11am and 2pm. If you are after a golden atmosphere, choose the end of the day, knowing that the water colour will be different.

Over the year, each season has its advantages. During the dry season, from November to June, there is very little rain, the sky is often clear and runoff disappears. The water is cooler, though, especially early in the year, and some periods see a stronger swell or windy days. During the rainy season, from July to October, the water is warmer and pleasant for swimming, but rain and storms can cloud the sea near the coast for a day or two.

So there is no guaranteed perfect month, and that is fine: beautiful clear-water days happen all year round. The best strategy is flexibility. If your stay lasts several days, keep one day free for kayaking and pick it at the last minute, based on the forecast and our report from the beach. That is what regulars do, and it is what earns them the best outings.

Making the most of clear water

When the sea is crystal clear, the clear kayak is probably the best way to enjoy it. Its invisible hull puts you right above the bottom, as if you were floating in mid-air. In Ouakam, you glide over volcanic rocks at the foot of the cliffs; in Ngor, you cross the bay facing the island. Rental costs 6,000 F per kayak, with or without an instructor, and the life jacket is provided and mandatory. Children are welcome from age 6 with an adult.

Clear-water days are also the best for a drone photoshoot. From the sky, transparent water reveals the shape of the seabed and its shades of green and blue, and makes the figure in the kayak stand out. If you have planned a photoshoot, choose a calm late morning if you can, and let us know: if the sea is murky that day, we will offer to move it.

Swimming is tempting when the water is clear, but stay careful. Only swim in suitable areas, close to shore and never alone. Rocky bottoms can be slippery or sharp: water shoes are useful. Watch out for currents, even in a calm sea, and do not swim away from a kayak without the team’s agreement. A mask and snorkel let you watch the fish near the rocks, always in a safe area.

Finally, clear water is water worth protecting. Leave no rubbish on the beach or in the water, do not walk on seagrass, do not take anything from the bottom and, if possible, use a reef-friendly sunscreen. Dakar’s seabed is home to fish, crustaceans and seabirds, and it is thanks to their good health that we can still enjoy these beautiful days of transparency.

What if the water is murky?

Sometimes the sea does not cooperate. That is no reason to give up on your outing, but rather to adapt it. First option: switch spots. If Ouakam is churned up by the swell, Ngor may be calmer, and vice versa. Our team will tell you on the phone that morning, saving you the disappointment of green water in the wrong place.

Second option: change the time. Wind and light change during the day. Slightly dull water at 11am under a hazy sky can become much nicer at 1pm when the sun breaks through. Conversely, if the wind picks up in the afternoon, it is better to go earlier. Being flexible by an hour or two is sometimes enough to change everything.

Third option: change activity. Some outings do not depend on water clarity. Jet skiing in Mermoz is all about speed and the corniche scenery. A boat trip to Ngor, Almadies, the Mamelles or Gorée shows you the coast from offshore, with swimming breaks when the sea allows. Kayaking itself remains a lovely outing along the cliffs, even if you see less of the bottom.

Fourth option: postpone. If you have time, moving your outing by a day or two is often the best decision, especially for a drone photoshoot where water colour matters a lot. We are happy to offer another slot when conditions are not good. What we will never do is promise you turquoise water the sea is not giving us: we would rather tell you the truth and have you come back on the right day.
